A 2-1 victory for England Veterans’ Over 70’s against old rivals Wales in Cardiff on Wednesday 19th November.
The red dragon fire extinguished…
On a cold, frosty day, England formed a guard of honour, applauding Wales onto the pitch following their recent World Cup triumph in Japan.
England seized the initiative – dominant in possession and after 30 minutes England’s pressure finally told. Steve Mole produced a superb individual effort, firing home from an acute angle to give England a thoroughly deserved 1–0 lead.
The second half began with renewed Welsh purpose, as the hosts probed and attacked with greater conviction. But, England’s defence stood firm, expertly marshalled by Man of the Match Eamon Whelan.
England then doubled their advantage. Under pressure, Wales surrendered possession, Mole spotted the keeper off his line and executed a clever lob from 20 yards to claim his second goal of the match.
Wales found a lifeline through a debatable penalty – the handball was deemed to have occurred inside the box. Dick Steer’s spot-kick struck the post on its way in, reducing the deficit. 2-1.
Tensions rose. England’s Bill Darton was denied by a superb save from Welsh keeper, Alan Meacham and eventually the final whistle blew.
Victory meant England regained the NHS Challenge Trophy which was presented to Captain Rob Beel by FAW President, Mike Jones.
Our thanks to the match officials and to the Ocean Park Arena for hosting a competitive and thoroughly entertaining game.
