Four / SIx Nations Tournaments

The Over 55’s Four /Six Nations veteran football tournament takes place annually, typically in September.

The inaugural Over 55’s Four Nations tournament took place in 2019. Ideally the tournaments are contested by the four Home Nations, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales but the RAF took part in the first tournament because Scotland were unable to field a team. There was no 2020 competition due to COVID and England Veterans’ Over 60’s stood in as the fourth nation in 2021. The 2022 tournament was cancelled due to the Queen’s death. Maccabi GB have been invited as the fourth nation since 2023.

Each nation plays the other three nations, usually over a period of three days. Two games typically take place on a Friday, two on a Saturday and two on a Sunday. Each nation takes a turn to host and shoulder most of the costs.

In 2026 the competition was expanded to six nations, as a trial. Each nation plays the other five nations but games are only 50 minutes in duration. Teams play two games on Friday and Saturday and one on Sunday. Joining England, Northern Ireland and Wales were Scotland, Republic of Ireland and Bangladesh. Unfortunately Maccabi were unable to participate.

England versus Wales

A special footballing relationship exists between England and Wales veterans’ football. It has existed ever since the first international fixtures contested between the Over 50’s and Over 55’s at Bisham Abbey, Buckinghamshire in June 2009.

That first Over 55’s game was won by Wales 2-1 and there have been matches home and away pretty much every year since. These matches are in addition to those played between the two countries in the Four Nations and other tournaments.

Since July 2023, England and Wales Over 55’s have contested the Martin Morley Cup – Martin has been involved with the English Veterans set up since the very first games with Wales. He has played for the Over 50’s, 55’s, 60’s and 65’s and successfully managed the Over 55’s for many years. He owns Emperor Scaffolding in Leicestershire and is very generous in his sponsorship of all the England age groups.
