A 3-0 victory for England Veterans’ Over 65’s against old rivals Wales in Cardiff on Wednesday 12th November.

A great start by England, scoring after just 3 minutes – a Peter Coffill corner was headed goalwards by Kevin Mooney. It fell to Ashley De Vera Davey with his back to goal and he laid it back to Mooney to strike home.

4 minutes later England went two up. A bad back pass by a Welsh defender saw the keeper struggling to get to the ball as it went across the box. Superior pace from De Vera Davey beat the keeper to the ball and he tucked it in the corner of the net.

Wales came back into the game as England wasted a couple of great chances to go further ahead and Wales had their best spell for the last 20 minutes of the first half.

Another quick start by England saw them score again just 2 minutes into the second half – Mooney’s left wing cross was superbly met by Clem Read at the back post and he finished from six yards.

England largely dominated but again failed to convert their chances – one from John Powell hit the post from the edge of the box.

The victory means England retain the Dermot Gallagher Challenge Cup which was presented to England Captain Peter Coffill by Mark Adams, Vice President of the Welsh FA.

Kevin Mooney for England and Steve Branch for Wales were voted as Man of the Match by their respective opposition.

Many thanks to the match officials and to the Ocean Park Arena for use of their excellent facilities.
