A 4-0 defeat for England Veterans’ Over 55’s against a youthful and energetic Pompey Charity side on Sunday 9th November in Portsmouth.

The game was played for the Oakley Waterman Trophy in the spirit of remembrance and raising money for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

England settled quickly, knocking the ball around and matching their younger opponents in possession. However, a lapse in concentration at the back gifted Pompey the opener.

England responded superbly, creating several golden chances – a one-on-one opportunity was well saved by the Pompey keeper, before two efforts from the edge of the area skimmed the post. Despite the pressure, Pompey struck twice more, taking a 3-0 lead into half time.

A tactical shuffle in the second half saw England dictate periods of play and two more one-on-one’s were denied as England pushed to reduce the deficit.

Pompey added a fourth to put the result beyond doubt and England keeper Darren Steadman produced three excellent close range saves to earn Man of the Match and to keep the scoreline respectable.

Pompey lifted the Oakley Waterman Trophy, named after 6 year old Oakley who died of a rare form of cancer in 2005. The game was played in his memory and in support of the members and veterans of the British Armed Forces.

Heartfelt thanks to those who gave so generously and thanks to Baffins Milton Rovers Football Club for their hospitality and to Steve Hopes, match organiser and referee, for ensuring a poignant and fitting occasion.
