A thrilling encounter and a 4-3 victory for England Veterans’ Over 70’s against Leisure United’s Over 65’s on Wednesday 15th October in Sheffield.

England came out firing, dominating the early stages with two quick goals in the first 10 minutes. The opener saw Roy Gladwell whip in a cross that Dave York converted at the far post. Moments later, relentless pressure from England forced a mistake, allowing Tony Drinkell to intercept and launch a stunning 30-yard strike into an empty net.

Leisure United found their rhythm midway through the half, with Walker netting twice to level the score. Just before the break, Rob Beel was pulled back in the box, and Dennis Johnson coolly slotted home the resulting penalty to restore England’s lead.

The second half saw Leisure equalise again—Vic Hanley made a good save but couldn’t hold on, and Darton pounced to fire in the rebound. England responded swiftly: York delivered another pinpoint cross, and Steve Mole finished clinically from the centre of the box.

The final minutes were tense and hard-fought, but England held firm to seal a memorable 4–3 victory.

Our thanks to the match officials and the Isobel Bower Sports Ground, Westfield for use of their excellent facilities.
