Ten goals and a feast of football at the newly refurbished Brigg Town stadium on Sunday 24th August – a massive honour for England Veterans to be invited to play against Brigg’s Over 50’s at the new ground.
England passed and kept the ball well in the early stages but before long they were two down as the defence hesitated and the Brigg strikers ran through to score.
England stepped up the pace – Jon Quinn pulled one back and Mark Saggers fired home a 25 yard rocket to make it 2-2 by half time.
Brigg re-took the lead just after kick off but England quickly got back level when a defensive mix up gave Dave Gipp a tap in to make it 3-3.
England took the lead when Dave Smith ran on to a through ball to make it 4-3 and Gipp added a fifth.
Tony Spreight then scored on his full debut to extend England’s lead and Gipp scored again to make it 7-3 and complete his hat trick.
Our thanks to the match officials and to Brigg Town Football Club for a fantastic day of football.
Well done to the 55’s who now go into the Four Nations tournament in early September in fine form.
