Tri Nations Tournament
2026 heralds the inaugural Tri Nations tournament for the Over 65’s.
For the younger age groups, the tournament has traditionally been contested by the Home Nations – England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. Unfortunately neither Northern Ireland nor Scotland have been able to field Over 65’s teams.
But, for 2026, Northern Ireland feel able to field a ‘near 65’ team and the first Tri Nations Tournament will take place.
The format for the 65’s will be different from the younger age groups who play the tournament over a single weekend. England will travel to play Northern Ireland, probably in April and Wales will do the same a few weeks later. England and Wales will then play, most likely in May to conclude the contest and decide the overall winner.
The teams will play for the Dennis Murphy Memorial Trophy, kindly donated by Northern Ireland – Dennis was a shining light within the Welsh veterans football community. He played for Merthyr Town, scouted for Aston Villa and founded Merthyr Town Veterans Football Club back in 1987, the first veterans football club in Wales. He helped set up the Wales Veterans Football Association in 2009, became the Life, Vice-President in 2016 and was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to veterans football in Merthyr Tydfil. He represented Wales in age groups from Over 60’s to Over 75’s and took part in the Over 75’s World Cup tournament in Cardiff in 2024.
