A narrow 1-0 victory for England Veterans’ Over 70’s against the Essex Over 65’s representative team on Wednesday 21st January in Leicestershire.

Prior to the match, England Veterans’ representative Caps were awarded to Tony Drinkell, David York and David Blaylock in recognition of three international appearances for the Over 70’s.

Despite torrential rain throughout, England generated three scoring opportunities within the first ten minutes – York struck the post, Steve Mole’s effort was saved and York shot over from thirty yards.

Essex produced two notable attempts but were unable to beat Alan Kumrou in the England goal. England’s Mole, Dennis Johnson and Roy Gladwell also tested the opposing goalkeeper but the opening period concluded without a goal.

At half-time, substitutions introduced Peter Carney and Tony Sproats, marking their debuts for England 70’s. Both settled swiftly; Carney narrowly missed the target, and Sproats, after rounding the goalkeeper, hit the side netting.

England continued to apply pressure and with minutes remaining, England won a corner; York executed the set piece and Eamon Whelan converted at the far post, securing a deserved victory for England.

Appreciation is extended to the referee and assistant referees and to Lutterworth Athletic FC for providing excellent facilities, outstanding hospitality, and a much-appreciated hot meal following the match.
