So close but England Veterans just missed out on retaining the Over 75’s World Cup in Japan on Friday 3rd October…
It was a mixed bag for England Veterans on the third and final day of the 2025 70 Plus World Cup.
The Over 75’s beat Wales 5-4 on penalties in their semi final after drawing 1-1 in normal time. They then played Germany in the final who had beaten Tokyo 4-1 in the other semi final.
Unfortunately it was one game too far – England were defeated 3-0 and Germany took home the Gold medal. England had to settle for Silver.
But England’s Tony Platman won the ‘Golden Boot’ award for scoring the most goals in the tournament. Well done Tony.
Meanwhile, the Over 70’s unfortunately drew their ‘must-win’ game against West Japan 1-1 which meant they lost out on the third and fourth place play off on goal difference! They were undefeated in the tournament but failed to secure enough victories. A cruel way to go out but still a magnificent effort in a tough tournament.
Wales retained the 70’s trophy, beating Freddy Fund (USA) 2-0 in the final. CT United (USA) beat Taiwan 3-0 in the third and fourth place play off match.
