Four Nations Tournaments

The Over 50’s Four Nations veteran football tournament takes place annually, typically in June. Historically, the tournaments were contested by the Home Nations – England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. The first tournament was hosted by Scotland in 2011. There was no tournament in 2020 due to COVID and Team GB replaced Scotland in the 2021, 2022 and 2023 tournaments. Scotland returned to the fray in 2024.

Each nation plays the other three nations, usually over a period of three days. Two games typically take place on a Friday, two on a Saturday and two on a Sunday. Each nation takes a turn to host and shoulder most of the costs.

England versus Wales

A special footballing relationship exists between England and Wales veterans’ football. It has existed ever since the first international fixtures contested between the Over 50’s and Over 55’s at Bisham Abbey, Buckinghamshire in June 2009.

That first Over 50’s game was won by England 1-0 and there have been matches home and away pretty much every year since. These matches are in addition to those played in the Four Nations and other tournaments.

From 2026, England and Wales Over 50’s will contest the Derek Edkins Memorial Cup – which was donated by David Lazell and named in memory of the father of England 50’s Manager Steve Edkins. Derek initially managed and coached at Aveley FC in Essex and they played tribute to him at a recent match. He then spent 25 years at Hornchurch FC, initially as Manager of the Reserve team, followed by a spell as Club Physio and ending up as Club President until his passing in May 2025. Aside from a number of strong Cup runs the highlight for Derek was his trip to Wembley to see Hornchurch defy the odds and lift the FA Trophy in 2021. He keenly followed his son’s footballing exploits and was immensely proud when Steve was selected to represent England Veterans.
