Missed chances by England Veterans’ Over 70’s denied them the win over the Silver Foxes (Leisure United) on Tuesday 24th February in Leicestershire. The game ended 1-1.

Before the match, representative Caps were presented to Brian Kirk, Bill Darton and Perry Smith commemorating 3 international appearances for England Veterans Over 70’s.

England made a strong start and created early chances through Tony Sproats, Steve Mole and Bill Darton but efforts were either saved or narrowly off target. After 24 minutes, Mole beat two defenders and finished calmly to give England the lead.

Additional first‑half opportunities fell to Roy Gladwell, Darton, Mole, and Dennis Johnson but none were converted. Defensively, Tony Drinkell, Don Bradley, Bob Thorpe and Peter McRobert were well‑organised, restricting the Silver Foxes to long‑range attempts, all of which were dealt with confidently by Ken Hitchell in the England goal.

The second half was more balanced. A challenge on the edge of the area led to a penalty awarded to the Silver Foxes, which Pete Stacey converted to level the match. England continued to press, with further attempts from Thorpe, Rob Skinner, and Gladwell, but could not find a winner. In the final minute, Hitchell produced an excellent diving save to prevent a late Silver Foxes winner.

Our thanks are extended to the match officials and to Kirby Muxloe Football Club for their hospitality.
