A 3-1 win for England Veterans’ Over 70’s against a Cambridgeshire & Essex Over 65’s representative team on Wednesday 25th March in Cambridge.

England played against the challenging wind in the first half and the opposition were in the ascendancy. Cambs & Essex broke the deadlock after 24 minutes with a shot from the edge of the area.

England started the second half with the wind in their favour and a tweak to their midfield defensive strategy. Two minutes after the restart, Steve Mole received the ball near the corner of the box, turned, and skilfully lobbed the goalkeeper.

In the 56th minute, Eamon Whelan’s strike from outside the box was parried by the keeper allowing John Todd to convert the rebound and give England the lead.

In the 84th minute, Whelan scored from 20 yards, to secure the victory.

Our thanks to Fitzwilliam College for providing an excellent playing surface, Cambridgeshire & Essex for their hospitality, the officials for managing the match efficiently, and The Grapes public house for their post-match refreshments.
