A slim 1-0 victory for England Veterans’ Over 65’s against Wales in the second game of the inaugural Tri Nations Tournament on Wednesday 29th April in Cardiff.
In the first game, on 15th April, Northern Ireland beat Wales 2-0 in County Down.
Wales dominated the first half, playing with a strong wind behind them. They had a few shots and a 30 yarder was superbly tipped over the bar by England goalkeeper Gary Corby. 0-0 at half time.
In the second half, with the wind in their favour, England pressed forward without creating any real chances. Then, after 83 minutes, England Captain Steve Slater hit a 40 yard screamer which slammed against the Welsh bar and rebounded to safety.
With the game heading for a 0-0 draw, England won a corner in the 89th minute – Russell Lane’s delivery into the six yard box eventually dropped for Mike Heatherley, who twisted and rifled the winner in to the roof of the net.
Steve Slater was nominated England’s Man of the Match.
Our thanks to the match officials and to Ocean Park Arena for hosting the game.
The victory means England go to Belfast on Friday 8th May for the final game of the tournament, needing a win to be crowned Tri Nations champions. Northern Ireland only need a draw to lift the Dennis Murphy Memorial Trophy.
Everything to play for. Come on England!
