A narrow 2-1 defeat for England Veterans’ Over 70’s against the Silver Foxes of Leisure United on Tuesday 12th May in Sheffield.

On a blustery day, England fielded a squad side to give players the opportunity to stake a claim for European Cup selection in Cardiff, in June.

In the opening 20 minutes, England did not play cohesively and the Silver Foxes took full advantage, scoring twice from corners.

After the drinks break, management adjusted the team and England began to play with greater unity. In the 36th minute, Eamonn Whelan broke into the box and was brought down. He stepped up to take the penalty and placed the ball confidently into the corner of the net.

In the second half, England had the advantage of the wind. Both teams played some good football, but neither could convert possession into clear chances on goal.

In the 79th minute, the Silver Foxes were awarded a penalty, but it was well saved by Ken Hitchell in goal.

Thank you to the Isobel Bowler Centre for hosting the event, and to the referee and assistant referees for officiating.
