England Veterans’ Over 70’s opened their European Cup campaign with a deserved 2–1 victory over Germany in Cardiff on Monday 8th June.
Germany took the lead in the 15th minute after winning a free kick just outside the area. Keeper Brian Kirk made the initial save, pushing the ball away, but the German forward reacted quickest to convert the rebound.
England responded well and were back on level terms five minutes later. David York won possession and squared the ball to Roy Gladwell, who finished confidently from 20 yards to make it 1–1 at half-time.
England raised their level after the break. Steve Mole forced a save, Don Bradley struck the bar with a header and both Peter Stacey and York tested the German goalkeeper.
With just two minutes remaining, England found the winner. Mole received the ball on the right, beat his defender with quick footwork, cut inside, and curled an excellent finish into the far corner.
In the other game, Wales beat Denmark 2-1.
Tomorrow, Tuesday 9th, England play Denmark in a 2pm kick off. Wales and Germany play in the early game at 12.00pm.
Come on England!
