Over 70’s European Cup – Day 3

England win the 2026 Over 70’s European Cup.

England win the 2026 Over 70’s European Cup.

A 0-0 draw against Wales on the third and final day of the European Cup in Cardiff was enough for England Veterans to be crowned European Champions on goal difference.

England had the better chances in the first half – Roy Gladwell, David York, Steve Mole, Don Bradley and Tony Sproats all went close and keeper Brian Kirk dealt with a couple of chances from Wales. The half ended goalless.

The second half was more defensive but as the match neared its conclusion, Wales were awarded a penalty for handball – Kirk produced a crucial save, preserving the deadlock.

Shortly afterwards, the referee blew the final whistle and England celebrated winning the European Cup with the point they needed.

In the other game Denmark beat Germany 1-0.

Wins against Germany and Denmark together with today’s draw meant England finished with 7 points and plus 4 goal difference. Wales also finished with 7 points but with plus 2 goal difference. Well done gentlemen. Unlucky Wales.

Our thanks to the match officials and to Wales and the Ocean Park Arena for hosting an excellent senior veterans’ football tournament.
