England Veterans’ Over 65’s unfortunately bowed out at the semi-final stage of the Oxfordshire Over 60’s tournament on Sunday 30th August.

England progressed from the group stage in second place – games were 11 aside but only 20 minutes in duration. They opened with a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Bristol Over 60’s before producing their best attacking display of the group stage with a convincing 3-0 win versus North Leigh Over 60’s.

Their only group defeat came against a strong Buckinghamshire Over 60’s, who edged a tight contest 1-0.

Ian Brew with two goals, Russell Lane and John Powell were all on target during the group campaign.

That set up a semi-final against Oxfordshire Over 60’s, where England enjoyed plenty of possession and controlled much of the game but found clear-cut chances difficult to come by. The decisive moment came shortly before half-time when Oxfordshire broke the deadlock to take a 1–0 lead.

England responded strongly after the interval but the goal they deserved proved elusive and Oxfordshire held firm to secure the victory.

Oxfordshire beat Buckinghamshire in the final on penalties after drawing 1-1 in normal time. Congratulations to Oxfordshire.

Our thanks to the match officials and to Oxfordshire’s Kevin Bovington for organising a great tournament. Our thanks also to North Leigh Football Club for use of their facilities.
