England Veterans’ Over 70s were held to a 1–1 draw in their latest warm-up fixture away to Dunton & Broughton on Tuesday 2nd September.
England controlled the opening exchanges and carved out several opportunities, but a breakthrough eluded them and the first quarter ended goalless.
After England rang the changes, their momentum dipped, and the home side took full advantage before half-time. A misplaced ball in midfield allowed Dunton & Broughton to surge through the centre and slot home the opener.
Further substitutions at the interval did little to restore fluency, and England looked increasingly untidy in possession. Relief came deep into added time when a spell of pressure led to a penalty. Stephen Hawkins stepped up and confidently sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to equalise.
Although the draw ensured England avoided defeat, the performance left much to ponder. With the World Cup campaign fast approaching at the end of the month, sharper finishing and greater cohesion will be the focus in the weeks ahead.
Our thanks to the match officials and to Broughton Astley Leisure Centre for hosting the game.
