Following on from their excellent draw against England Veterans’ Over 60’s on the season opener day, an England Over 65’s XI took on the England Over 60’s ‘A’ Team at Kirby Muxloe and were defeated 3-2 in a close game. The 65’s taking the opportunity to look at some squad players and trialists.

The 65’s went 1-0 up early on when Trevor Miall beat a player in the box and fed Barrie Baxter to score.

England 60’s ‘A’ team bounced back with two goals to take the lead – Kevin Stewart netted the first and Dean Smart the second following an excellent flowing move on the counter after the breakdown of a 65’s attack.

2-1 to the 60’s ‘A’ at half time and they extended their lead soon into the second half through Chris Hill who had an excellent game.

England keeper Graham Cox made a number of excellent saves to keep the 65’s in the game but they came on strong as the game entered its final stages with Steve Edkins having a goal controversially disallowed.

They then scored in the last minute through Miall but the ref blew immediately after the kick-off before the 65’s could continue their pressure for an equaliser.

Well done gentlemen on both sides.

Our thanks to the match officials and to Kirby Muxloe Football Club for their excellent hospitality.
