England Veterans’ Over 55s secured an impressive 3–1 victory over the Milton Keynes Veterans League representative XI after a lively and entertaining encounter on Sunday 15th March in Buckinghamshire.
England were fast out of the blocks and could easily have been three goals ahead inside the opening five minutes. Despite the early pressure, a combination of wasteful finishing and some alert goalkeeping kept the scores level.
The breakthrough came from a brilliant flowing team move – the attack ended with a superb cross from David Gipp, which was expertly turned home by Ricky Cornish to give England a deserved 1-0 lead at half time.
Milton Keynes began the second half brightly and were quick to capitalise on an error in the England defence, equalising to make it 1-1.
England soon regained control of the match, increasing the tempo and putting sustained pressure on the MK defence. The pressure eventually told when Gipp found the net to restore England’s lead before adding a second to secure the victory.
The Milton Keynes goalkeeper produced a fine performance, making several important saves, while England’s wasteful finishing meant the scoreline remained respectable.
England’s Ricky Cornish was awarded Man of the Match.
Our thanks to the match officials and to Newport Pagnell Town Football Club for hosting the game.
