A narrow 2-1 defeat for England Veterans’ Over 70’s against Oxfordshire Over 65’s on Tuesday 2nd July in Buckinghamshire.
Peter Carney had England’s first notable effort, striking from 30 yards, but comfortably saved by the goalkeeper. Midway through the first half, Oxfordshire scored twice, both from efforts from outside the box, lobbing the advancing Brian Kirk and finding the net.
England reduced the deficit just before half-time. A long ball from Don Bradley evaded the Oxfordshire defenders, allowing Rob Skinner to run through and beat the goalkeeper from just inside the area.
England raised their level in the second half – Andy Campbell shot wide, Bob Kippen was denied by a fine save and Brian Houlston saw a cross deflected over the bar. England also had a good shout for a penalty when Skinner was brought down but Oxfordshire held firm to secure the win.
Our thanks to the match officials and to Beaconsfield Town Football Club for hosting the game.
