A 3-0 victory for England Veterans’ Over 65’s against Wales on Wednesday 1st July in Leicestershire.
England took the lead after 26 minutes – a pass from Paul Turner put John Powell through on goal and he slotted home calmly.
Wales had the ball in the net after 35 minutes from a quickly taken free kick but the Referee had clearly told them to wait for the whistle.
1-0 at half time.
England hit a three minute purple patch after 80 minutes scoring two and missing a one-on-one with the keeper.
The first was a superb strike from Russell Lane and then Iain Mackie was put through by Kevin Mooney and finished well after rounding the keeper. A minute later Mackie could have scored again but this time the Wales’ keeper made an excellent save.
The victory means England retain the Dermot Gallagher Challenge Cup.
Russell Lane was nominated Man of the Match for England. Phil Fisher for Wales.
Our thanks to the match officials and to Lutterworth Athletic FC for hosting the match.
