England regain the Aneurin Bevan Shield!

After rousing national anthems, a highly competitive game ensued.

England showed great fitness and application but Wales had their moments – a mix-up up involving too many eager England players caused a through ball to ricochet across the face of the England goal. Steve Kearney was on hand to tidy up but a close call.

England kept prompting with some neat football and their pressure eventually paid off when a shot cum cross from the left, invited Paul Bennett to hit the roof of the net from 20 yards.

England continued to threaten but it was still only 1-0 at half time.

In the second half, England continued where they left off. A long kick from England keeper Alan Kumrou took the Welsh defence by surprise and Johnny Molloy’s tenacity saw him clear on goal and he slotted home at the near post from the tightest of angles. 2-0 England.

Another burst of pace from Drew Warren saw a good run and pass to Bennett in the middle who released Molloy to race in and smash an unstoppable shot across the keeper and into the far corner.

3-0 to England at the final whistle and Captain Geoff Martell was presented with the Aneurin Bevan Shield.

Jim Ellis was nominated England’s Man of the Match. Joe Quarini for Wales.

Our thanks to the match officials and to Newmarket Town Football Club for hosting a tough but enjoyable fixture.
