England Veterans Over 65’s won 4-0 in an evening kick off against Guernsey Over 60’s on Saturday 27th September in the Channel Islands.

The game was played as part of a day long celebration to open Guernsey’s impressive new Victoria Park Stadium – it was the final game of four matches.

England started well under the bright new floodlights and had two good chances in the first 10 minutes but failed to convert.

Guernsey pushed England back but were unable to create scoring opportunities. A bouncing ball around the Guernsey box then fell to John Powell who deftly lifted the ball over the onrushing keeper to put England 1-0 up.

Soon after Powell had a second goal disallowed for offside so it was still 1-0 at half time.

7 minutes into the second half, left footed Alan Collett hit a 25 yard screamer of a free kick into the top corner to make it 2-0.

England then had a lucky break when a long ball over the top was lobbed over onrushing keeper Graham Cox but luckily fell the wrong side of the post.

15 minutes from the end Rob Skinner struck a shot from 25 yards over a stranded keeper to make it 3-0 and 5 minutes later Powell scored his second and England’s fourth with a good run and curling shot into the net.

A superb performance against a younger team and the England celebrations carried on late into the early hours despite some players having an early morning flight home.

Our thanks to the match officials and to Guernsey for their hospitality and for inviting us to help christen their wonderful new stadium.
