Tri Nations / Four Nations Tournaments

The Over 60’s Four Nations veteran football tournament takes place annually, typically in March.

The inaugural Over 60’s tournament was hosted by Northern Ireland in 2020 but it was only a Tri Nation tournament comprising Northern Ireland, England and Wales because Scotland were unable to field a team. There was no 2021 competition due to COVID but in 2024 Denmark thankfully joined the fray to make it a Four Nations tournament.

Each nation plays the other three nations, usually over a period of three days. Two games typically take place on a Friday, two on a Saturday and two on a Sunday. Each nation takes a turn to host and shoulder most of the costs.

England versus Wales

A special footballing relationship exists between England and Wales veterans’ football. It has existed ever since the first international fixtures contested between the Over 50’s and Over 55’s at Bisham Abbey, Buckinghamshire in June 2009.

The first Over 60’s game was in May 2012 in Clydach Vale, which Wales won 4-2. There have been matches home and away every year since. These matches are in addition to those played between the two countries in the Tri Nations, Four Nations and other tournaments.

From 2012, England and Wales Over 60’s have contested the Frank Terrell Cup – which was donated by the Wales Veterans Football Association and named after Frank who was Chairman of Taff Wells Football Club, one of the founder members of the Wales Veterans Football League. He represented Wales in the inaugural England v Wales fixture at Bisham Abbey in 2009 and was part of the winning Welsh squad at the inaugural Over 50’s Four Nations tournament at Largs, Inverclyde in 2011.
