A 2-1 win for England Veterans’ Over 65’s ‘A’ team on Saturday 6th June against Wales at Dragon Park, Newport.
England flew out of the blocks and a Tony Flynn mishit shot was turned into the net by Paul Turner after just 36 seconds!
Turner added a second 13 minutes later – a Kevin Mooney free kick was poorly cleared and it fell kindly to Turner who netted from 6 yards.
Wales bounced back and within two minutes a wonderful 30 yard free kick by Welsh left back Paul Staddon flew in to the top corner past keeper Paul Currie to reduce the deficit.
After half time Wales pushed forward but the England defence kept them out fairly comfortably.
With 10 minutes left an altercation saw Tony Flynn and a Welsh defender both sent off for a clash when maybe a booking would have sufficed.
Well done to the seven players making their first England appearance in an international game.
And our thanks to the match officials and to Dragon Park for use of their excellent facilities.
